Each year, San Antonio School celebrates a reunion for ex-alumna. This day
is a long standing tradition of the school with over 500 women in attendance.
The celebration is held on the same day each year and graduates look forward to
enjoying the day with their friends and their CSA family. The day includes
lunch, speeches, awards, dancing, and much laughter and sharing of fond
memories. As you can see by the picture, the Sisters too enjoy the day, even
the new Sister!
PROCESSION
The custom of outdoor processions is an important part of the faith life of
the Church in Peru. Our neighborhhood parish held their procession for the
feast of the Exultation of the Cross. After a beautiful celebration of the
mass, the people processed out into the street. It is a privilege and honor to
carry the cross through the streets. I don't know how heavy it is, but twelve
men strain to raise and lower the shrine as they take turns walking along the
way. There is a leader who rings a bell to coordinate the group and he also
directs the walk as all must step in unison. A band accompanies the faithful in
music and song. Each procession varies but usually include stops at altars
along the way, incense bearers, fireworks, and various prayers and local
devotions ending in the late hours of the night.
BACK IN SCHOOL
Every Monday morning at CSA begins with a school assembly. The assembly is conducted by the president of what we would call the student council. The president begins with a prayer. All students are then called to attention for the presentation of the flags. And let me tell you, the students stand at attention, two feet together and hands at their sides. The escolta present the flags in a formal and dignified march into the assembled group. All 600+ students join in singing the national anthem while the flag is raised. This is followed by announcements from the activities director and news from the directora (principal). The assembly ends with the singing of the school song. I have found the assembly to be a great beginning to the week and look forward to it each Monday morning.
