AREQUIPA - La Ciudad Blanca

Having completed the first quarter of the school year, a break in the schedule allowed for a visit to Peru's second largest city.  Arequipa lies at the foot of three major snow capped volcanoes, Chachani, Pichu Pichu and Misti.  It is nicknamed the White City of eternal blue skies because of the many Colonial structures built of "sillar" - a material of solidified white volcanic rock.  We enjoyed walking the streets, visiting the churches and cloisters, sampling the delicious cuisine, and learning the history of this beautiful city.

Rising the second day to leave at 3 AM for a tour of Colca Canyon wasn't the highlight of the trip but as they say in Peru, it was "vale la pena" (worth the trouble).  We traveled through the Colca Valley with its fasinating stepped terraces dating back to pre-Inca times to arrive at some of the world's deepest canyons.  Our guide informed us the canyons were "double deep" of the Grand Canyon or to be exact, 3180 meters in depth and home of the majestic condors.  The condor, with a wing span of three meters, soars through the valley in the early hours of the morning to and from it's nest.  The beauty of the magnificient birds, scenery, and people were a day to remember on a most enjoyable trip.
