From the Desk of Sister Christina

February 2008

The grace and peace of God our Father be with you! I trust that these days in ordinary time probably are filled with not only ordinary life happenings but may they be enlivened with some extraordinary happenings for you. It is hard to believe that we are about to begin the holy season of Lent. May this holy season help each of us to regain a deep sense of the love God has for each of us.

Congratulations to our students who achieved first and second honors this report period. We are very proud of you.

Job Well Done

Congratulations to all our students for their fine work and research and presentation of their Science Fair projects. All are winners for their work whether it was an individual project or class project. Hopefully all have gained new knowledge. Results from the Science Fair judges determined that two of our eighth graders will represent Saint Matthew School at the state level. Elizabeth A. (Battling Kitchen Bacteria) and Julia S. (Video Games and Children) will move on to the Connecticut State Science Fair held at Quinnipiac University, March 11 - 15. We wish them luck!

Mathematicians - here we come!

Our seventh and eighth grade Honors Math Students participated in the annual IHM Math Contest. This is a highly challenging, "brain stretching" pencil and paper math competition. Participants are seventh and eighth graders from all schools where the IHM Sisters work. Our thirteen eighth graders and seven seventh graders competed against students in their grades from seven different states. Among our seventh and eighth grade students we have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners:

1st:  Emily M. and Joseph J.
2nd: Jessica L. and Taylor R.
3rd:  Corrine M., Teddy C. and Michael Sk.

Congratulations to all of you for your fine work and consistent effort in your studies!

Re-Registrations for 2008 - 2009

These have been in process and were due January 31st. If you intend or not for your children to attend St. Matthew School, please return your orange re-registration form to the school office. As these happen, plans for ordering books and supplies for the new school year are being put in place.

Sister Catherine Irene, our IHM Community Superior and principal of St. Matthew School from 1997 - 2001, visited our school on February 5th - 7th. Sister Catherine was very pleased with the continued excellence in instruction, learning, and high academic achievement that St. Matthew School is known for. Though Sister Catherine's visit was brief, she was very happy to be among friends.

God's blessings continue to be on you and your loved ones. Peace!

Sister Christina Joseph, IHM
