Welcome to Middle School Language Arts & Literature!


Trimester 1 


 

Language Arts

  • Students across all grades will learn about different writing styles including personal narratives, creative writing, and research based writing. 
  • Students will expand upon their grammar knowledge and apply their new understanding of grammar rules to their writings.
  • Big projects: Students will begin research their science fair project topic, give an oral presentation personal narrative, and create a Halloween inspired creative writing story.

Literature

  • Students will read different literary works to analyze fiction and nonfiction selections. These readings will culminate in the first novel study for each grade.
  • Grade 6 will read A Long Walk to Water and then work on a collaborative project in the makerspace.
  • Grade 7 will read Anne of Green Gables, analyzing how characters change because of Anne.
  • Grade 8 will read The Outsiders and learn how to make connections through hexagonal thinking.

Language Arts

Students will write personal narratives including characters, setting, events in sequence, and plot using descriptive language.

Students will conduct short research segments to gather facts for research driven writing.

Students will demonstrate usage of grammar rules including proper punctuation to merge clauses into a single sentence. 

Literature

 

Students will read a variety of genres and develop strategies for understanding literary works.  Students will learn to analyze different aspects of the works, such as development of plot, characters, usage of literary devices, and the moral choices of characters. 

Students will hone the skills to make predictions and connections to the text.

After graduating for NWR #7 High School, I earned by B.S. in Government and Sociology at Suffolk University in Boston in 2011. From there I earned my J.D. from Roger Williams School of Law in Bristol, RI in 2014. After years of figuring out what I was most passionate about, I started my educational career as a building substitute in Canton, CT in 2018. I student taught at Lewis Mills High School and completed my Alternative Route to Certification program with the state of CT. In 2021 I was fortunate to accept the position as the middle school ELA and Literature teacher here at St. Matthew School.

I am delighted to be returning for my third year as the ELA and Literature teacher here, ready to spread the joy of reading and writing with the next generation.
